Scientists are conducting experiments using gene drives that could get rid of the mosquitoes.
GM (Genetically Modified) mosquitoes produced in the laboratory lay eggs.
These GM mosquito eggs are released into an area.
Once these male have hatched and develop to the adult stage, they mate with wild females.
The genes are passed on to offspring.
The female offspring die before they become adults.
The result is that the number of mosquitoes in the area decreases.
This mosquito gene prevents female mosquito offspring from surviving to adulthood.
