The preserved physical body (Thaan-aana Thirumeni) of the great 11th-century philosopher and saint Sri Ramanujacharya rests within the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. He lived for 120 years and entered a meditative state (Samadhi) in 1137 CE.

The preserved, mummified body (Charama Thirumeni) of the 11th-century saint Ramanujacharya is believed to be housed within the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu.

Location: 

The body is in a seated position in a shrine (Sannidhi) dedicated to him in the southwest corner of the temple's fifth enclosure.

Preservation: 

It is traditionally maintained using natural substances, primarily sandalwood paste and camphor (Pachai Karpooram), applied twice a year.

Appearance: 

This practice, which has continued for over 870 years since his death in 1137 AD, gives the body an ochre or orange tint.

Significance: It is often referred to in Tamil Vaishnava literature as "thaanaana thirumeni" (selfsame body).

Ramanuja (11th century), one of the most celebrated theologians of Hinduism, made his monastic home by the temple at Srirangam. Here he wrote his famous commentaries on the Brahma Sutra, which expressed a qualified non-dualism of the Vedanta, his Vishishtadvaita.

Massive complex expanded over centuries (9th to 17th centuries) by multiple ruling dynasties, including the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire.

His disciples preserved his mortal remains using a paste of saffron and camphor, and it remains enshrined in the temple grounds
